Farewell my friend, 13 years wasn't sufficient.

Tomorrow, a couple will say goodbye to their oldest cat, who has been a source of happiness in their lives for many years. About two and a half years ago, two different veterinarians suggested that he might have severe inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or stomach cancer. Given his weak condition at the time, the couple and the vets felt that surgery could be risky. Instead, they started a treatment plan that included monthly B12 and steroid shots, daily probiotic supplements, and a special diet with prescription food and limited treats.

Since their cat does not handle travel well and becomes anxious in the car, they were relieved to be able to give his medications at home. The treatment was successful for a while, but by July and August of this year, they noticed that the shots were only providing relief for a couple of weeks instead of much longer as before. This decline continued, and by August, September, and October, he was only getting a few days of relief.

New medication was suggested, but it did not seem to help. A few weeks ago, their cat started having accidents, and the other cats began to behave differently toward him. After further discussions with their veterinarian, they agreed it was time to prepare for the difficult farewell. They were referred to a service that provides at-home care for this situation. Although they believe this decision is best for their pet’s comfort, it is still painful to say goodbye. Today, they allowed him to enjoy some string cheese and peeled chicken nuggets, ending his strict diet. He loved to play fetch and was unique among their four cats for enjoying sleep under the covers.

What are your thoughts on such difficult decisions for pets?
