Sophia Bush married Chad Michael Murray in 2005, but their marriage lasted only five months. Now, she is reflecting on her experience and the signs she ignored during their relationship, as shared in her memoir, “And I Will Tell You Mine.”
Bush and Murray portrayed a couple on the show “One Tree Hill” and began dating in 2003 after filming started in Wilmington, North Carolina. Bush mentioned that she felt a strong urge to support him when he shared details about his challenging upbringing. However, she noted that after a warning from co-star Hilarie Burton not to date him, Murray claimed that Bush inspired him to improve himself.
In her memoir, Bush discusses being attracted to Murray’s emotional side but later encountered problems in their relationship, which she attributes to his insecurities and possessiveness. Bush also suggests that Murray was unfaithful while they were together.
The couple married in Santa Monica in April 2005. Shortly after, Bush remembered asking Murray to skip her 23rd birthday. She realized she could not handle more conflicts or his controlling behavior. The situation worsened when one of Murray’s friends, who had missed the wedding, revealed to her that Murray might have been seeing other women during their time together. After five months of marriage, they decided to separate, and their divorce was finalized in December 2006.
Reflecting on her past, Bush expressed that the experience taught her the importance of trusting her own instincts. She felt that she allowed others to influence her decisions too much. Bush also recognized a recurring pattern in her life related to trying to please others, a challenge she believes many women face.
Despite the breakup, Bush maintained a professional attitude while working with Murray. She focused on performing her job well and did not let personal issues affect her work.
As for Murray, he has not publicly responded to the claims made in Bush’s memoir. However, he addressed a different cheating allegation from another of his ex-girlfriends in 2023, stating he prefers to focus on the present rather than dwell on the past.
Bush feels that her previous relationship seems distant to her now, stating that she has changed significantly since then, just as Murray likely has. Since 2013, he has been in a relationship with Sarah Roemer, with whom he has three children. In 2025, Bush married former soccer player Ashlyn Harris.
