Heidi Widmer, a 35-year-old middle school teacher who shares her life on Instagram as @omgitsheidiii, traveled across the country with her dog after going through a divorce. She relocated from Buffalo to Los Angeles for a new beginning and settled into an apartment in Culver City in July. On her first night, she was disturbed by a loud noise from the apartment above. She described it as sounding like someone repeatedly rolling a bowling ball, as reported by ABC7. This noise persisted for several weeks, and she considered confronting her neighbor about it.
While in the hallway, she encountered her neighbor, Carole, an 86-year-old woman from Britain who has Parkinson’s disease. Carole was trying to carry recyclables but dropped them due to her shaking. Widmer later expressed her realization in a video that the noise was Coming from Carole’s walker. She helped collect the recyclables and inquired if Carole had any family nearby, to which Carole replied she did not.

Afterward, Widmer visited Carole’s apartment and learned that Carole had been living alone for several years, too proud to seek help. The condition of the apartment was poor, so Widmer began taking out the trash twice a week and cooking for Carole once a week. She later launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with Carole’s needs. The campaign has raised over $93,000 to cover expenses that Social Security and Medicaid do not, as stated by ABC7.
Videos of their friendship have attracted nearly 30 million views, and Widmer reported receiving messages from people across the country. Carole chose not to appear on camera but shared her gratitude for Widmer over the phone. Widmer recalled asking Carole what might have happened if no one had reached out to her, to which Carole responded that she would have managed until someone helped her.
Widmer and Carole have decided to call each other family, with Carole stating that Widmer is like a granddaughter to her. Widmer affirmed this connection, noting their special bond.
