Codie Sanchez, an entrepreneur, is expecting her first child. She revealed her pregnancy with husband Chris Petkas in June 2026 and mentioned her due date is in December. Recently, she posted on X a list of parenting advice she received from her parents, who are from the Boomer generation. Her mom is a special education teacher, and her dad is a self-made blue-collar builder. Along with a photo of her baby bump, Sanchez shared her parents’ insights and expressed admiration for all parents.
Before she was pregnant, Sanchez sought guidance from her parents on how to raise children. She listed ten pieces of advice they shared, thinking others might find them helpful too.

1. Kids are not friends. Sanchez observed her parents believe that children should be guided and protected, rather than treated as friends. They emphasized the importance of being respected rather than just liked.
2. Psychological strategies are valuable. Sanchez recalled how her mother would use a tactic when she was in trouble. Her mom would ask questions she already knew the answers to, making it easy for Sanchez to come clean.
3. Stay united. Sanchez noted that her parents presented a solid front when it came to parenting. They rarely fought in front of their children and always supported each other’s decisions.
4. Make time a priority. Her parents emphasized the importance of spending quality time together. Sanchez shared her dad’s saying that time is irreplaceable, so they focused on being present for her and her brother.
5. The four-chair rule. At home, her family had a place for open discussions. Sanchez explained that they would gather in their living room for in-depth talks on various topics, making sure everyone defended their opinions calmly.
6. Family comes first. Sanchez mentioned a Spanish saying her parents lived by, which means blood is more important. They supported one another and worked together as a family.
7. Commit to your choices. Her parents encouraged her and her brother to make their own decisions but with the understanding that they needed to follow through. They couldn’t quit once they signed up for an activity.
8. Stay connected. Sanchez highlighted how her parents always answered calls from family, showing that they prioritize those relationships.
9. Empowerment over entitlement. Her dad would remind her that she is not a princess but a leader, reinforcing her sense of agency and responsibility.
10. Enjoy the process. Sanchez concluded by reflecting on how her parents taught her to find joy in what she does, reminding her that life is about the journey, not just the outcome.
