Space is enormous, chilly, and mostly quiet, but aboard Cap’n Martina’s spacecraft, there’s usually a lot happening. A strange noise that causes panic among the crew turns out to be just someone’s hungry stomach. An encounter with a space rock doesn’t go well, and what starts as an ordinary malfunction quickly escalates into a major cosmic blunder. The Adventures of Cap’n Martina portrays life in space with a series of delightfully silly situations, featuring an eccentric crew that always seems to be on the brink of trouble.
This series originates from The Beauforts Comics, which started on March 1, 2009, as a weather-related cartoon on the website of meteorologist Terry Swails from the Midwest. The early characters had weather-themed names like Eddy, Gale, Radar, and Aurora, but the comic later expanded into a wider universe. The strip still shows an interest in science, occasionally sharing facts, such as how Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, is filled with lakes of liquid methane instead of water. The humor also includes puns about cosmic “rock stars.”

Bright colors, lively expressions, and snappy dialogue help keep the jokes flowing, and the characters from The Beauforts have even been used in educational programs and publications like Decoding Asthma and Decoding Food Allergies.
Thirty comics from The Adventures of Cap’n Martina are collected here in sequence, allowing readers to follow the crew’s amusing journeys. What do you think of Cap’n Martina and her wonderfully chaotic crew?
