In December 1989, during the important Malta Summit, US President George H. W. Bush met with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev for talks aimed at reducing tensions in the Cold War. The author’s father, who is seen in uniform on the right side of the photo, served as the aide-de-camp to Malta’s President, Ċensu Tabone. Since the President had many grandchildren and did not want to single any of them out to present flowers to Raisa Gorbacheva, he chose the author instead. At nearly six years old, the author was thrilled to participate and enjoyed missing school. The author presented a bouquet of flowers to Raisa, who responded by giving a gift in return. What do you think about such historical moments?
