Anyone who shares a home with a cat knows the house rules are simple: the cat writes them, and everyone else obeys. Cats often reject perfectly good food, claim keyboards as their beds, and demand attention at the most inconvenient times. Despite these behaviors, many find them irresistibly adorable. San Diego cartoonist Lucas Turnbloom understands this well. In 2017, he and his wife adopted Sugar, a rescue cat who had been passed between several homes before landing in a shelter. It took her about a month to settle in, and then she began doing strange things. Turnbloom started drawing comics about her antics to make his wife laugh, and she encouraged him to share them online. The response was so strong that his series, How to Cat, became a regular feature on GoComics in 2019. In these comics, Sugar is reimagined as Sweetie, a round little feline with an angelic face and a talent for chaos. Whether she is making a mess, testing her human’s patience, or plotting new ways to get what she wants, Sweetie always seems to have the upper paw.
