46 Passengers Stopped by TSA for Reasons They Still Can't Comprehend

Airport security is very strict to ensure everyone’s safety, and most travelers know the rules are necessary. However, even when they follow all the guidelines, some travelers still encounter problems at security. A Reddit user asked for stories about the oddest reasons people were stopped by TSA, and many respondents shared their experiences. Here are some of the most surprising stories.

One traveler, who used to work at an airport, reported that they often went through security using the employee line. They would usually bring sandwiches to save money. On one occasion, TSA claimed the peanut butter was a liquid and wouldn’t allow it. The traveler pointed out that if they turned it upside down, it wouldn’t spill. Another time, a pilot in front of them faced similar issues. He had a small screwdriver set, but TSA tried to take it from him, saying it could be a weapon. The pilot argued that as a pilot, if he wanted to harm someone, he could do much worse. Despite his protests, TSA did not allow him to keep the screwdrivers.

Another user recounted traveling with their girlfriend, who had TSA precheck, while they did not. She chose to go through the regular line with him because he had just undergone eye surgery. When they reached the check-in desk, the TSA agents noticed her precheck status and asked why she wasn’t in that line. After explaining, they gave her a precheck card, allowing them to both join the precheck line. They encountered delays there due to a woman in a wheelchair, while travelers from the regular line moved through. Eventually, TSA asked why the user did not have a precheck pass. After explaining again, they were told to return to the body scan line alone, leading to wasted time. After passing through the scanner, TSA had to pat them down due to a continuous glucose monitor on their arm, which was apparently related to their earlier confusion.

Another traveler struggled to determine which line to use, as both pre-check and regular lines were long and lacked clear signs. When asking a nearby agent which was the precheck line, the agent responded dismissively. The traveler explained that they understood what precheck was but couldn’t identify the correct line. The agent continued to be unhelpful, making sarcastic comments instead of assisting.

In another case, someone with two laptops had a difficult time explaining to TSA that they needed both a Windows computer and a Mac for work. It took almost three hours for TSA to find someone who recognized that this was a valid reason. By that time, the traveler had already missed their flight.

A traveler who did a lot of government work mentioned that they were not allowed to take their laptop out of their bag, which led to confusion at security.

These stories show some of the frustrating reasons travelers have been stopped by TSA. If you have experiences like these, feel free to share them in the comments!
