A 68-year-old bar owner from Brooklyn, Debbie Shields, has unexpectedly gained fame after a funny subway encounter with comedian Conan O’Brien. Within just 89 seconds, they were jokingly discussing an imaginary marriage, two kids, and four ex-husbands. Shields’ quick wit had O’Brien laughing, and online viewers appreciated her comedic timing. Since the incident, many people have been visiting her bar in Bed-Stuy, and she is even thinking about trying stand-up comedy. Shields remarked that “one minute and 29 seconds changed my life.”
While traveling with a friend named Tony, Shields switched from the A train to the F train and noticed O’Brien filming for Kareem Rahma’s online series, Subway Takes. Tony, a fan of O’Brien, encouraged Shields to approach him. Shields decided to introduce herself, telling The New York Times about her plan to sit next to the comedian.

Shields greeted O’Brien, and their conversation quickly became a fun comedy routine. When asked if he knew Shields, O’Brien pretended they were married. Instead of correcting him, Shields played along, and they started to create a fictional family history. Shields joked that their children were in medical school and jail.
O’Brien kicked off their imaginary story, mentioning that they had two kids. Shields humorously responded, asking how they were doing. O’Brien inquired if he ever sent them money, to which Shields replied that the children still loved him despite his absence. O’Brien continued with the joke, questioning how love could exist without visits or financial support. Shields cleverly suggested that pictures in the house kept their father present in the kids’ lives.
The playful banter continued as O’Brien told Shields she was his happiest marriage. Shields quickly teased that she had heard similar things from her other three husbands. This response caused O’Brien to laugh again. Rahma commented on how well Shields matched O’Brien’s humor, and he said they could create their own show.
The playful exchange worked well because Shields remained in character and responded smoothly. The humorous interaction soon gained popularity on social media, exposing her talent to a broader audience unfamiliar with her bar. Following the viral video, Shields noticed an increase in customers visiting her Confession Bar in Brooklyn’s Bed-Stuy neighborhood, eager to meet her after her funny moment with O’Brien.
