Historically, dressing up for Halloween dates back around 2,000 years to the Celts, who celebrated Samhain at the end of the harvest. According to History UK, they believed the night at the end of October allowed spirits to roam freely, prompting people to wear disguises to either blend in or scare away these spirits. The earliest costumes were made from animal hides, making them quite serious creations.

As time moved on, the calendar changed. In the 9th century, All Saints’ Day was moved to November 1, which made the night before known as All Hallows’ Eve, eventually shortening to Halloween. By the 15th century, it became common for people in Britain to go door-to-door in disguise, performing songs or skits in exchange for food.

This practice was known as mumming or guising, and in Scotland, children still perform for treats. As noted by Syfy, these traditions were brought to America by immigrants and transformed into the modern practice of trick-or-treating.

For many years, most costumes were made at home. Ripley’s highlights that rural Americans often created scary designs related to death. The 1950s saw a shift when manufacturers recognized a market for ready-made costumes inspired by popular television characters.

Adults also began to join in the fun, leading to a change in the tone of costumes from scary to humorous. However, not every idea captured the public’s interest, with Syfy mentioning an effort in 1950 to rename the holiday as Youth Honor Day that did not succeed. While people continue to embrace traditional ghost costumes, they have not adopted the new name.

Now, pets are joining in the Halloween celebrations. According to the NRF’s 2026 Halloween survey, consumers are expected to spend $0.92 billion on pet costumes this year, part of a total projected Halloween spending of $13.5 billion. Another NRF report found that 23 percent of people plan to dress up their pets, which is an increase from 17 percent in 2019.

The most popular pet costume is a pumpkin, representing 11.6 percent of choices, followed by hot dogs at 5.9 percent and ghosts at 2.8 percent, as reported by WDBO. A dog dressed as a hot dog is a humorous idea that has proven to be quite popular. Other popular choices include superheroes, witches, and various animals, showing that pets can have big imaginations. However, the same report indicates that cat owners are less likely to dress their pets, which many people would find unsurprising after trying to place a hat on a cat.
