Tim Kring discussed why he chose Hayden Panettiere to portray Claire Bennet in “Heroes.” He noted that the actress credited her co-stars with helping her stay grounded during a challenging period in her life.
Before “Heroes” premiered in 2006, Panettiere had already been acting for several years. However, it was her role as Claire in the NBC superhero series that made her widely recognized. At just 16, she played a typical cheerleader who uncovers her superpower of spontaneous regeneration. Now, two decades later, Kring reflects on the casting process and what made Panettiere unique during her audition.

In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Kring explained that they did not have the budget to hire many well-known actors for the large cast. Instead, he wanted to find performers who seemed like regular people. He mentioned that while they might be a bit more attractive than average, the goal was to have characters that felt relatable.
Kring imagined Claire as a cheerleader who wasn’t the typical popular girl but rather someone a little quirky and different. He shared that they quickly realized Panettiere was the right fit and that they didn’t search very far for her.
Kring praised Panettiere, saying she had an extraordinary acting talent along with a girl-next-door vibe. He highlighted her exceptional range, stating that she was the only actress they considered for the role of Claire. While he remembered other actors for different parts, Panettiere stood out distinctly.
Panettiere continued with the series until its last season. Tragically, she passed away on August 16, 2026, at the age of 36. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office classified her death as an accidental overdose due to fentanyl and other substances.
The show’s marketing campaign included the popular phrase “Save the cheerleader, save the world,” which helped “Heroes” achieve significant success. The series aired for four seasons and ended in 2010.
Despite the show’s popularity, Panettiere had personal battles with opioid and alcohol addiction, which she opened up about in a 2022 interview. She mentioned that while she had to keep it together while working, things spiraled out of control when she was not on set.
Earlier this year, she published her memoir titled “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” where she discussed her famous roles, including Claire. She described her time on “Heroes” as a liberating experience. In an interview with BuzzFeed, she reflected on growing up on the set and how the cast helped her during a critical time in her life. She acknowledged her struggles but expressed gratitude for her co-stars keeping her out of trouble.
