A new elementary school in a district near Denton, Texas, has been named after a longtime janitor, surprising many. Marilyn Hampton, who retired in 2022, worked as a custodian for the Aubrey Independent School District for 39 years. Her contributions went beyond just cleaning, as she made a significant impact on students’ lives. According to Aubrey ISD Superintendent Dr. Shannon Saylor, Hampton left a teaching legacy that emphasized kindness, hard work, and perseverance, making her a role model for both students and staff.
Hampton, now 76, provided school supplies to children, assisted them with their studies, and helped at sports events. Dr. Saylor described her as a steadfast and dependable figure within the district, stating that she truly represented Aubrey ISD. Despite her accomplishments, Hampton remains humble about her influence on the students, expressing her desire to brighten their days.

Hampton was the only sibling in her large family to graduate from high school. She had once seen herself as unsuccessful and never anticipated having a school named in her honor. Currently, she still works for the district, caring for infants and toddlers at the Early Bird Learning Center. During a school board meeting on October 21, 2026, she planned to speak on a different topic but was unexpectedly recognized for her long service. Dr. Saylor noted that even without a formal degree, Hampton’s contributions in education were significant.
At the meeting, Saylor asked her to unroll a red carpet that displayed the name “Marilyn Hampton Elementary School.” When the board announced the decision, everyone applauded, and Hampton was visibly moved. She expressed her disbelief at the honor.
The following day, she reflected on the news, still in shock about the school name. She emphasized the rarity of a janitor receiving such recognition, calling it an incredible honor. Recognizing local heroes like Hampton ensures that their contributions are remembered for years to come.
