Andrew did not raise his voice or make any rude comments. Instead, he calmly stood up, grabbed his phone, and said that since Kayla had decided to walk around their home in a towel as a test, it was time to set some rules. Kayla, with her arms crossed, asked what rules he meant. Andrew, smiling slightly, said he would call her boyfriend. Her expression changed instantly as she asked why he would do that. He reminded her that her boyfriend, who had thrown her out, had sent messages. Andrew then picked up a small envelope he had found on the living room table. It had messages from Kayla’s ex-boyfriend, Michael, asking her to collect her things and to stop saying he had thrown her out. Kayla looked frightened and said it was none of Andrew’s business. Andrew replied that while her relationship was not his concern, dishonesty in their home was.
When I asked Kayla for clarification, she looked away. Andrew then added that Michael was also asking about his car keys and the money he had lent her. Kayla’s mood shifted to anger as she questioned how Andrew knew this. He explained that Michael had contacted me because he was worried about Kayla not returning his belongings. Kayla denied it and claimed Michael was lying. Andrew stayed calm and told her that she could talk to him directly. He initiated the call, but Kayla rushed to stop him. Andrew stepped back, saying she seemed comfortable testing boundaries, so she should be able to handle a conversation. I had never seen Kayla look so uneasy. I heard Andrew ask me if he should hang up, and after considering, I decided that it was time to confront the situation. The call went to voicemail, and Andrew ended it, placing the phone down. Kayla was visibly upset and said we were unbelievable. I replied that what was unbelievable was her behavior after I had welcomed her into my home. She claimed she was only joking. I then asked why she continued after I had asked her to stop, but she didn’t respond.
Andrew spoke up again, stating that he loved and respected me and did not want to be part of whatever game Kayla was playing. He said that if she wanted to stay, she needed to respect both of us by dressing appropriately, being honest, and treating our home with respect. Kayla’s face turned red as she accused him of making her look bad. I explained that I was not asking for perfection, just respect. She turned to Andrew and asked if he made me say those things, but he replied that I should not have to explain basic boundaries. This made me realize that I was not being unreasonable or too sensitive. I was simply asking for respect. After that, Kayla went upstairs, and the house fell silent for the rest of the morning.
Later that day, she returned downstairs, fully dressed and holding her phone. She stood by the kitchen doorway and asked if we could talk.
