Minimalist photography can create a sense of calm in busy urban settings. Leon Yu, a photographer from Beijing, transforms everyday architecture and city environments into structured images by focusing on strong shapes, colors, and contrasts. He began his journey into street photography in August 2023, inspired by the work of notable photographers he found online, and decided to study the craft more seriously. Minimalism suited his artistic style well, as he prefers simple and uncluttered spaces. Yu has a long-standing interest in art and Western indie music, which have influenced his visual style.
For Yu, minimalism relates to solitude. He views being alone as a beautiful and meaningful experience rather than a negative one. This idea is evident in his photos, where people are often set apart from their surroundings by large areas of open space, deep shadows, or striking architectural elements. A selection of Yu’s work shows how light, geometry, and carefully positioned individuals can turn everyday situations into captivating images.

In these photographs, people do not dominate the scene; they serve as small yet important parts of larger compositions. Examples include a cyclist following a curved line beneath a dramatic building, a pedestrian surrounded by shadows, and a silhouette in a brightly lit passage. Yu uses reflections, symmetry, and strong diagonal lines to simplify complex settings while maintaining their scale.
Black and white images play a key role in Yu’s photography. He values its timeless quality and finds it works well for minimalist themes. However, he chooses between monochrome and color based on the scene. In his color images, he often limits the palette to one or two main colors, allowing elements like a red umbrella or yellow road markings to stand out as focal points.
Composition is critical in Yu’s work. He seeks a clear focal point, a strong atmosphere, and enough visual details to hint at a story without making the frame feel crowded. His admiration for the legendary Hong Kong photographer Fan Ho, known for his use of dramatic light and geometry with solitary figures, has influenced his understanding of minimalist photography.
Interestingly, Yu does not depend solely on high-end camera gear. He primarily uses an OPPO smartphone for its convenience and lower pressure, occasionally opting for a Leica Q2. Besides photography, he finds inspiration in techno music and values maintaining a peaceful state of mind.
Even though Yu started street photography recently, his images reflect a consistent way of seeing the city. By waiting for the right moment when light, architecture, and human movement come together, he distills busy spaces to their fundamental elements, showing how much remains when unnecessary details are stripped away.
