When people get married, they promise to stay together through everything. However, loving someone doesn’t mean ignoring their harmful behaviors. If a spouse is hurting themselves and the relationship, it’s important to address the issue. Ultimatums often do not lead to positive results, but sometimes they feel necessary when concerns are overlooked.
A woman gained attention online when she discussed how her marriage was suffering due to her husband’s weight. She finally confronted him and offered an ultimatum about his health. The situation was difficult, as it can be painful to see someone you love negatively impact their life and your marriage.

Ultimatums and boundaries are different. An ultimatum involves making a threat about a specific outcome if a certain action isn’t taken. Boundaries focus on expressing clear needs and expectations for a successful relationship. Josiah Teng, a therapist based in New York City, explained to PsychCentral that setting boundaries establishes what is needed for a relationship to thrive, while an ultimatum indicates that those needs have not been met.
Michela Dalsing, a licensed mental health counselor, compared the difference between an ultimatum and a boundary to choosing under pressure versus following a law. People often give ultimatums when they feel desperate because their needs have been ignored repeatedly. According to Teng, this can arise from a serious issue in the relationship, like a harmful habit.
Licensed clinical psychologist Adam Haynes-LaMotte views ultimatums as a way to communicate a final chance for change. For example, if a partner has destructive habits that affect both the relationship and mental well-being, it may be necessary to suggest they seek help. However, many therapists advise against using ultimatums regularly, as they can be unhealthy and lead to control issues, harm feelings of safety, and manipulate emotions.
Teng noted that ultimatums often signal that all other options have been tried and failed, leaving no room for compromise. This type of situation can lessen the chances of a relationship surviving.
If someone wants to lose weight, patience and small, achievable goals are important. While it is possible to lose weight alone with commitment, having support from friends and family can make the process easier. Developing healthy habits alongside a supportive network is generally more sustainable.
