AI's 25 Humorous Misinterpretations of Memes

There is an AI bot called ResNeXtGuesser that analyzes popular memes and shares its interpretations on Twitter. The creator, who goes by the name Glen Neumann, is a computer engineer based in San Jose, California. He has enjoyed managing the project since its launch in June 2021, and it has gained a large following.

Neumann’s interest in the project began during his college years when he took courses related to machine learning and worked on assignments involving image recognition. He created a neural network that could differentiate between pictures of cats and dogs and found it amusing to use memes or random images to see how the neural network attempted to classify them.

He also experimented with advanced networks like ResNeXt and found it fascinating to understand how these networks processed information and made predictions, even if the results were often incorrect.

After graduating, Neumann worked in embedded systems and did not have the chance to engage with machine learning until he decided to create a Twitter bot based on neural networks. He thought it would be a fun way to revisit the technology while learning about the Twitter API.

ResNeXt is known for being an effective architecture for image classification, having been trained on the ImageNet dataset, which contains many labeled images. ResNeXt was the winner of a competition in 2016 for creating a highly accurate neural network. Neumann chose to use a pre-trained model for ResNeXt from the PyTorch library, which made it easier for him to develop the bot.

It took some time for the bot to gain traction, but one of the first tweets to gain significant attention featured a plush toy on a tank, which is a character from the Touhou video game series. This tweet reached a dedicated fanbase on Twitter and became popular, leading to an increase in followers. As the bot continued to produce amusing predictions, it attracted even more followers during those moments.
