On October 12, a man tragically fell from a rollercoaster at Six Flags Over Georgia around 4 p.m., shocking other park visitors. When police arrived, they found him unresponsive on the ground under the ride. Social media soon featured videos and images showing the man dropping headfirst, colliding with other cars and riders during his fall. The amusement park describes the ride as a “hypercoaster,” which reaches 200 feet in height, accelerates to 70 mph, and lasts for 210 seconds.
An eyewitness, who claimed to have previously worked in maintenance, expressed concern that such an incident should never occur, mentioning multiple safety measures in place for the harness. It remains uncertain how the man fell, whether due to a mechanical issue or human mistake, but authorities have identified him. The deceased is Hassan Jihad Kariem, a 42-year-old father of two from Atlanta, Georgia, known as a dedicated teacher and technology professional at Wesley International Academy. His family described him as a passionate educator committed to his community.

Reports indicate Kariem was riding the rollercoaster with his son at the time of the accident, while his wife and young daughter watched from below. A family member expressed that his death was a shocking loss, and they seek answers about the incident. Another visitor, who was also on the ride, recounted that the fall occurred near the spot where a souvenir photo camera was located, noting that Kariem appeared in their pictures just before the tragedy and hit the ride multiple times during his fall. Several riders mentioned that blood from Kariem splattered nearby when he collided with the ride’s structure, and at least three other riders sustained injuries as he hit a haunted house attraction below.
Multiple witnesses shared their experiences of the horrifying event. A couple described their shock, stating they went from enjoying their time to screaming in disbelief. They noted that ride operators had checked their safety harnesses before the ride. Another witness said they made eye contact with Kariem as he began to rise sideways in his seat and then fell headfirst. Another account described how the ride hit him, causing him to be flung from it. A woman who was at the park with her husband and friend reported seeing a girl with blood on her skirt after allegedly being struck by Kariem when his harness failed.
After the accident, videos showed the rollercoaster stopped mid-ride, leading other riders to walk down a steep incline as the park was evacuated. In response to the incident, Six Flags closed nine rides across its locations for safety reasons, according to a company spokesperson. What do you think about the safety measures at amusement parks?
