Fifteen years ago, Andy Grammer was performing for tips on the Santa Monica pier. Now, he is a successful recording artist known for hits like “Good To Be Alive (Hallelujah),” “Keep Your Head Up,” and “Don’t Give Up on Me,” which have inspired many people. Over the years, Andy has achieved a lot. He got married, has three daughters, toured frequently, developed a one-man show, started a podcast, and even launched a clothing line focused on kindness. His sixth studio album, titled Big Stupid Heart, is set to release on October 16th. Andy describes this new album as a strong and joyful promotion of optimism and keeping an open heart in a complicated world.

In an interview, Andy discussed various topics, including music, positivity, family, and the concept of “reckless sweetness.” He expressed that his album serves as a defense of optimism. For him, optimism means seeing the potential for growth in every life experience, even during difficult times. He believes that understanding this can help maintain a positive outlook. Andy acknowledged that, although he wouldn’t wish for bad experiences, life often brings challenges. He finds that smiling through those challenges, based on a deep understanding rather than naivety, is essential.

When it comes to dealing with cynicism, Andy shared that it doesn’t help him and feels limiting. He encounters cynicism frequently but believes that taking action or serving others helps him move past it. Andy prefers to stay active rather than dwell on negative feelings. While he is working on meditation, he finds that action is a more effective way for him to cope.

Regarding staying grounded amid the world’s chaos, Andy suggested that looking at the larger picture can be overwhelming. Instead, he recommends focusing on what one can offer to those close to them. He thinks acts of kindness, including throwing a community party or creating uplifting songs, can make a difference. For him, writing songs for those who need encouragement is a way to contribute.

He mentioned simple acts of kindness, such as paying for the coffee of the person behind you in line. This small gesture, which his daughters have learned to practice, spreads positivity and reminds everyone of the goodness in people. Andy noted that it can be easy to criticize such actions, but the intent behind them is what matters.
