In Colorado, the challenging soil conditions can make it tough to maintain a green lawn. However, one homeowner managed to change their yard significantly after using a Garden In A Box. This special gardening kit is part of a partnership between Denver Water and Resource Central, aimed at providing Coloradans with low-water gardening solutions that still yield vibrant plants. Since its inception in 2003, the program has enabled residents to conserve around 240 million gallons of water, averaging 5,000 gallons saved per household each year.

A homeowner recently shared their impressive yard transformation on Reddit, showcasing their progress over the course of a year with the help of Garden In A Box. They expressed satisfaction with the outcome, noting that only about three of the 80-90 plants they planted did not survive, which they considered a success. Their before-and-after photos revealed a yard that had been revived, filled with various flowers, grasses, and healthy plants that had replaced the previously dry landscape. The homeowner noted the plants had grown significantly and that more had flowered than they had anticipated. They mentioned looking forward to seeing how the garden would evolve in future seasons.

In addition to the kit, they also planted some extra plants and grasses, making their yard lively. The homeowner found joy in the new pollinators and birds that appeared, saying that weeding was minimal and manageable. They pointed out that they are first-time homeowners, and a key reason for purchasing the home was the opportunity to create a landscaped environment. They highlighted the effort they put into the project, including installing an underground irrigation system and gathering materials like rocks and mulch.

Garden In A Box has been assisting families in Colorado with sustainable and pollinator-friendly plants for over 23 years. Each kit contains 15-30 plants in 4-inch pots, eliminating the need for seeds, and features an easy plant-by-number layout suitable for gardeners of all skill levels. Neal Lurie, the president and CEO, mentioned that these kits simplify sustainable landscaping, requiring less water while providing a beautiful yard. The kits come with clear planting guidelines, maintenance tips, and watering suggestions. Prices for the kits in 2026 ranged from $66 to $206, and they varied in size from 60 to 100 square feet, accommodating gardens for full sun and partial shade.

Although the 2026 kits are sold out, interested individuals can sign up for the Garden In A Box program for 2027. What do you think about the Garden In A Box program?
