An 86-year-old man named Dale has been working on a 62-foot steel boat in his front yard for almost 40 years. Recently, he received unexpected help that brings him closer to achieving his dream of sailing to Alaska. Dale, who lives in Mineral Wells, Texas, began the boat project in 1987 with the aim of finishing it and setting sail. The boat includes four staterooms and is about 75% finished. However, at his age, he can no longer continue the work alone, and a steep hill makes it difficult to move the boat without heavy machinery.
Dale’s story gained attention when three visitors from England—Laurence Benson, Benjie, and Will—heard about his boat and decided to visit him. They found Dale enthusiastic about his project. Benson noted that Dale’s passion for the boat was as strong as it had been four decades ago and mentioned that Dale even climbed a ladder to show them the deck for the first time in years.

Benson, a content creator with a large following, started a GoFundMe campaign with his friends. The goal was to raise money for the remaining work on the boat, the equipment needed to get it down the hill, and transportation to a launch site. Within just a few days, the campaign collected over $41,000 from more than 1,500 donors, nearing its $45,000 target. Benson indicated that around $50,000 is necessary to move the boat and get it on the water, but the story does not end there. He is collaborating with Dale’s family to help fulfill Dale’s lifelong dream.
