In September 2015, Heidi Johnson was dealing with her 13-year-old son, Aaron, who was going through a rebellious phase. He often challenged her authority and claimed he should have more independence. In a response to his attitude, she wrote a letter outlining her expectations and rules. She mentioned that since he was making money off his YouTube channel, he would need to buy back items she had previously purchased for him and contribute to household expenses.

In the letter, she listed his financial responsibilities: $430 for rent, $116 for electricity, $21 for internet, and $150 for food, totaling $717. She also set additional chores for him, saying that failing to complete them would result in a $30 fine.

After reading the letter, Aaron reacted negatively, throwing it on the floor and leaving the apartment in anger. Heidi encouraged him to take a walk to cool off, which is something she does when upset. When he returned home, he staged a sit-in in her room, challenging her authority. Eventually, he went to his room and decided to return some items of his own that he felt he should earn back due to his behavior. He apologized and asked what he could do to regain his possessions, starting with some clothes and a comforter.

Heidi later decided to share the letter on Facebook for laughs and connection, but forgot to set the post to private. This led to over 165,000 shares and various comments, some critical of her parenting. In response, she posted again to clarify her intentions, saying she did not want to put Aaron on the street and aimed for him to take pride in their home.

She explained that he was becoming more appreciative and had begun to earn back some of his belongings. Heidi also shared her house rules, which included doing his best in school, completing homework before screen time, and certain household chores like taking out the trash and unloading the dishwasher.
