Simon adjusted his uniform as he approached the table where Richard, the restaurant owner, was seated. Richard did not smile as he introduced Simon to Mrs. Linda Harris. Simon recognized her and acknowledged her. Richard then mentioned that Linda had shared an incident from the day before and wanted to know Simon’s side of the story.
Simon explained that they were busy with over a hundred guests and he was trying to keep everything organized. Richard asked if that was why Simon had asked an elderly woman to leave, believing she might scare off customers. Simon denied that was the case. Linda interjected, stating that it was indeed what happened. She explained that she had come in from the rain, soaked and looking for a warm place to sit while waiting for the weather to improve. She mentioned that she had offered to make a purchase and was not seeking special treatment.
Richard asked Simon what he had told Linda. Simon felt uneasy as he admitted he had informed her they were busy. Linda added that Simon had also said she would scare away guests. A nearby couple listened as Simon lowered his voice and apologized if Linda misunderstood him. However, Linda insisted she understood him well.
Richard then inquired if Simon knew why Linda was dining with him. Simon did not respond. Richard explained that Linda had given him his first chance in the restaurant industry many years ago when he was young and low on funds. He shared that she had been supportive and had helped him start his business despite others advising her against it. Richard praised Linda for believing in him and for her ongoing friendship and mentorship.
Linda modestly claimed she had done nothing special, just believed people deserved opportunities. Richard reiterated his disappointment with Simon’s actions the day before. Simon attempted to explain his situation again, saying he had to make quick decisions during a busy time. Richard emphasized that being busy did not justify treating someone without respect and that Simon had judged Linda based on her appearance.
Linda spoke up, expressing that she did not want Simon to lose his job over her experience. She clarified she only wanted a place to wait for the rain to stop. Richard acknowledged her feelings but pointed out that this situation reflected how people treat others when they believe they have nothing to offer.
After a moment, Simon apologized to Linda for his behavior. When she asked why he was apologizing, Simon replied that he was wrong. She prompted him to consider how he would have acted if she had appeared wealthier. Simon did not respond, and Linda affirmed that she expected that reaction.
Richard then asked Simon to step aside for a private discussion. The two men left the table together.
