A math problem involving four single digits and basic operations should be easy for a high school graduate to solve. However, people are divided on the answer to this problem: 6 ÷ 2 (1+2) = ? Some calculate it as 9, while others arrive at 1. A poll shared by World of Statistics showed that over 1.3 million people participated, resulting in nearly equal answers.

This math question serves as a metaphor for societal divisions. The discussions around it reflect deeper issues. Many believe math has strict rules because that’s how they were taught. They learned that different ways of solving a problem should lead to the same answer. Basic math seems simple, with clear right or wrong answers, and any mistake indicates a miscalculation.

However, some problems may be more complex than they appear. The strong feelings people have about their answers mirror social divisions. Some insist the answer is 9, while others firmly believe it is 1. This intensity in arguing about who is correct highlights how people often declare their answer as the only valid one instead of discussing their differences.

A significant reason for the disagreement lies in how individuals learned math in school. The order of operations, often remembered through acronyms like PEMDAS or BOMDAS, is crucial in this case. The equation 6 ÷ 2 (1+2) relies on this rule. Those familiar with PEMDAS confidently reach the answer of 9 by calculating the parentheses first and then performing the division and multiplication from left to right. However, others, particularly those with backgrounds in physics or different learning experiences, may interpret 2 (1+2) as implied multiplication, leading them to treat it as one term and resulting in 6 ÷ 6 = 1.

So, which answer is correct? Technically, both are valid. This ambiguity might be frustrating but also liberating if accepted. Mathematicians have pointed out that the way the problem is written creates confusion, causing different interpretations and answers. Without clearer context, there is no single “right” solution. This situation encourages us to think about how we handle disagreements and the importance of understanding different perspectives.
