Donald Trump encouraged Americans to vote in the midterm elections, suggesting his name was on the ballot. However, after Democrats won both the House and Senate on November 3, he offered a different reason for the party’s defeat. This prompted criticism from some voters who had previously supported him but were now frustrated with his response. One voter expressed that denial wouldn’t change the election results but was relieved he had acknowledged them.
Trump’s Republican Party experienced a significant loss, giving Democrats control of Congress. They gained at least 224 seats in the House, surpassing the 218 needed for a majority. Democrats also flipped several Senate seats in traditionally Republican states like Texas, Kansas, and South Carolina. Notable victories included Democrat James Talarico over Republican Ken Paxton in Texas and Annie Andrews defeating Darline Graham in South Carolina. They also won seats in North Carolina and Ohio, adding to the Republican defeat.

Starting in January 2027, Democrats will lead committee discussions and have more power to review the administration’s actions, investigate issues, and obstruct unwanted legislation. Despite this, Trump will still be president until January 2029 but will have to deal with a Congress controlled by Democrats.
Instead of owning up to the losses, Trump turned to Truth Social to explain the situation. He claimed that he wasn’t on the ballot and suggested that if he had been, Republicans would have won easily. His statement came after he had urged supporters to consider the midterms as if he were running. At a rally in Syracuse, New York, in early October, he had encouraged voters to act as if he was on the ballot and made similar comments at another rally in Georgia.
Critics found his post-election comments particularly striking. One voter noted that they had voted for Trump multiple times and criticized his remarks as egotistical, stating that the party lost because it failed to prioritize America. Another supporter agreed, mentioning that they had voted with the belief that he was on the ballot. Some longtime Trump supporters called his response self-centered and suggested that taking responsibility would have been wiser.
In the meantime, many celebrated the Democratic success, stating that voters had understood the task at hand. One remarked on the poor performance of Trump-backed candidates and the negative feelings toward him. Later, Trump adopted a more conciliatory tone in a different message.
