Declawing Cats

Declawing Cats

A kitten, who is seven months old, recently had a vet visit for a check-up. During this visit, the owner requested that the vet also trim the kitten’s claws. The owner brings the kitten to the vet each month to check her weight and clip her claws due to some concerns about her weight. At the last visit, the vet suggested that the owner might consider having the kitten declawed. The owner inquired if there was a medical reason for this recommendation. The vet explained that since the owner comes in every month for claw clipping, declawing would be an easier solution for both the owner and the vet. After researching declawing, the owner found it seems cruel and unnecessary if there is no medical need. They are now seeking advice on whether this practice is common among cat owners or if they should find a new vet.
