Disturbing Posts by Mother of Ex-Child Actor Who Went Into Tiger Enclosure Prompt Concerns Following Deadly Incident

On October 10, a man in his 20s entered the tiger enclosure at the Land of the Tigers attraction in Yorkshire Wildlife Park, located in Doncaster, UK. This decision led to a tragic outcome. A Siberian (Amur) tiger named Altai, who had been resting in the enclosure, approached the man and attacked him fatally. The man was identified as William Chapman, a former child actor known for his role in the ITV show May Contain Nuts and for portraying Edward Jenner in BBC’s True Stories. Witnesses reported that he was taking selfies before the tiger attacked and then got down on all fours, pleading with the animal.

After the incident, old social media posts from Chapman’s mother surfaced, raising new questions about the situation. A user found a photo from nine years ago that showed William with a cheetah, which had been shared by his mother. Although the names of Chapman’s family have not been disclosed, online investigators identified his mother as Virginia Burges through her past blogs and social media activity. One user shared a photo she had posted of Chapman with his two sisters.

Burges also advised a person online about a “holistic product” she believed helped her son, who she said struggled with schizophrenia and struggling mentally thoughts. A photo that drew significant attention showed a young William touching a cheetah at a wildlife park during a trip to Uganda in 2017. Reactions to these photos varied, with one person commenting on the family’s decision to allow him to visit the park alone.

Burges wrote in a 2014 blog about her son’s interest in theater, mentioning that he had attended the Jackie Palmer Stage School from a young age. She noted that although he was less interested in singing and dancing as a teenager, he remained passionate about acting.

The day after William’s death, his family released a statement describing him as a “bright, warm, and engaging young man.” They mentioned that he had struggled with mental health issues for many years and was on strong medication. They asked the coroner to determine how this contributed to the circumstances of his death.

The family expressed deep sadness over their loss and requested that people stop sharing hurtful content about the incident. The statement referenced a controversial AI-generated video posted by former US President Donald Trump, which included footage of the tiger attack, with a caption about respecting nature.

An expert, Reece Oliver, a licensed zookeeper, provided insight into why the tiger may have attacked Chapman. He explained that normally, only enrichment toys or food are placed in the enclosure. He speculated that Altai may have seen Chapman as something unusual to investigate, which led to the tragic attack.
