When William Atek decided to foster a dog, he thought it would only last for a short time. He never expected that the small dog named Elko would become his partner for many adventures. Elko was discovered abandoned in a sealed box on the side of a road in Los Angeles at the age of two. He was covered in fleas and seemed very scared, showing signs of a tough past. William chose to give him something he desperately needed: safety, love, and a chance to start over.
After being rescued, Elko slowly learned to trust again, revealing a joyful and adventurous side that he had kept hidden. At first, Elko was so frightened that he shook all the time. Having been left behind in such a harsh way, he needed time to realize that not all people would hurt him. With William’s kindness and support, Elko began to feel more comfortable. His confidence increased, and his playful side began to appear, allowing him to enjoy his new life.

What began as a temporary foster situation turned into a strong bond that changed both of their lives. Wanting to provide the best life for his rescued pet, William decided to leave his regular job and make their dream of traveling together come true. Living in Los Angeles, 26-year-old William saved money and eventually sold his things that wouldn’t fit in his backpack. He also got Elko ready for a life on the road.
Their first big trip took them to Thailand, marking Elko’s first time on an airplane. What could have been a scary experience for a rescued dog became the start of an exciting journey. Shortly after, Elko received his own international passport, ready to travel the world with William.
Now, with over 45 countries visited and more than 630,000 followers on Instagram, Elko has transformed into a little explorer with big dreams. William and Elko share their adventures through their Instagram account, @awayonearth, where they document their travels. They have gone from a frightened puppy found in a box to a dog who explores the world and meets new people. Their mission has grown into a goal to make Elko the most traveled dog globally.
Their next big adventure is a road trip from Michigan to Argentina, working toward setting a world record for the most traveled dog. To support this journey, they have started a GoFundMe campaign to cover Elko’s travel costs, including vet visits, pet-friendly places to stay, and other necessities to keep him healthy and safe on their travels.
Elko’s journey from being abandoned to becoming a world traveler shows that every rescue animal deserves a second chance. Stories like his remind us that a pet’s past does not have to limit its future. What do you think about Elko’s adventures?
