Ethan Suplee Honors Hayden Panettiere in Vulnerable Essay, Reveals He Used Heroin During ‘Remember the Titans’ Premiere Night

Ethan Suplee wrote an essay on Substack this week in honor of actress Hayden Panettiere, sharing his own battles with addiction. Suplee, who is 50, acted alongside Panettiere in the 2000 film “Remember the Titans.” He talked about three occasions during the film’s production and premiere weekend when he used drugs.

Suplee reminisced about the film’s premiere on September 23, 2000, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. He described a moment on the red carpet when Panettiere, only ten years old at the time, ran to him for a hug. He felt a brief sense of happiness from her energy but admitted that he later went to the bathroom to use illegal substance.

He also recounted arriving late to a gathering with the real-life people they portrayed in the film. Suplee met Louis Lastik, the character he played, and felt self-conscious about his weight. He returned to the bathroom to smoke illegal substance again.

During an outing with the real football players, Suplee experienced a mishap when the golf cart he was in broke down. While waiting for a replacement, he and Lastik lagged behind the group. Suplee shared that he spent that time crying and using illegal substance in the bathroom while the movie played.

Panettiere was well-remembered for her role as Sheryl Yoast in the film, where she performed alongside a notable cast that included Denzel Washington. As Suplee left the stadium after the premiere, he encountered Panettiere again, who jumped into his arms. He reflected on his struggles, saying that while he did not overdose that night, he went to bed believing he might not wake up.

Suplee expressed a deep sense of loss after Panettiere’s passing. He acknowledged not knowing the details of her struggles but felt saddened by her death. He mentioned that asking for help was only part of his recovery; the real miracle was finding the strength to accept that help. After finishing “Remember the Titans,” Suplee got sober and lost over 250 pounds. He remains active in acting and advocates for health.

What are your thoughts on Suplee’s reflections about his experiences?
