Gen X has always had a rebellious spirit and tends to disregard rules. As this generation approaches retirement, they are considering what that means for them. Caren Magill, who runs the Retire(ish) YouTube channel, notes that retirement for Gen X will differ significantly from that of the Baby Boomers. She explains that this generation has always emphasized independence and is unlikely to change that mindset as they retire.
Magill observes that Baby Boomers typically followed more traditional paths, such as having stable careers and purchasing homes on a set timeline. Many of them had pensions, leading to a straightforward route to retirement. In contrast, Gen X faces a much less predictable future. Magill likens their situation to a famous quote from Back to the Future: the roads that Boomers traveled may not apply to Gen X.

Gen Xers are often willing to completely change their lives to pursue what they truly desire. Magill mentions that this generation isn’t afraid to disrupt their current lifestyles to create new ones. While many Gen Xers aspire to retire early, financial realities, such as high healthcare costs in the United States, can complicate those plans. She notes that more people from her generation are considering retirement abroad, whether for the long term or temporarily until they qualify for Medicare.
There is also a trend of Gen Xers embracing alternative lifestyles, such as downsizing to smaller homes for greater mobility. Some are not ready to retire yet but are making significant changes in their lives by returning to school or training for new careers. Magill adds that the concept of aging is changing; many individuals perceive being 55 today as younger than it was a decade or more ago.
As more Gen Xers create content on social media about their lives and views on aging and retirement, they are fostering important discussions. Magill appreciates that many people in this age group are finding ways to shape retirement that fit them, rather than conforming to traditional expectations.
She emphasizes that these thoughts reflect her perspective as a Gen Xer speaking to others in the same generation. Many individuals get caught up in what they should have accomplished by now, leading to feelings of being behind. However, Magill points out that the amount saved in retirement accounts is just one part of the picture. The other factor is what people actually require in retirement, and some may need less than they expect.
For those who have already paid off their homes and are willing to try living differently, the goal is to regain their time and freedom. Not everyone will have a conventional retirement, and that’s perfectly fine. They will find their own paths. What are your thoughts on how retirement should look for this generation?
