The writer received a pet from a friend who found him and his siblings abandoned outside her home. He was fine for a couple of weeks. However, they discovered a foxtail lodged in his body, which they removed, thinking it was a splinter. Although it left a small opening, he seemed alright, and they planned to take him to the veterinarian the next day.

The next morning, the writer noticed he was lying in an unusual position. When they helped him stand, he was unable to do so. They checked his legs, which were functional, but soon saw him experiencing jerking motions, confirming he was having a seizure. After researching, they found that the nearest veterinary clinic would not open for a couple of hours, while the closest 24/7 facility was the same distance away. Later, they found a closer 24/7 clinic that offered to come and get him within about twenty minutes. Sadly, he passed away in the writer’s arms before help arrived, and they then had to bury him. The writer expressed feelings of guilt, wondering if they could have done something differently to prevent this outcome.
