A truck driver shared his experience of coming home early for his daughter’s sixteenth birthday. He arrived three days ahead of time, only to find her sleeping in an old camper in the backyard. The temperature was very low at 19 degrees. His wife mentioned that their daughter preferred staying in the camper. The daughter didn’t speak but pointed to a baby monitor that was taped to the wall of the camper.

The driver typically worked long-haul routes and spent three weeks on the road for every week at home. His demanding job helped him pay off the mortgage after his first wife, Amy, passed away and supported his daughter Kaylee’s needs, like her orthodontics and sports equipment. Two years ago, he married Tara, who had a warm personality and reassured him that she could handle things at home.

One night, he came home late with a strawberry cake for Kaylee. The house was lit and warm, but he found Tara’s brother, Rick, sleeping in his recliner with muddy boots on the coffee table. When he asked about Kaylee, Tara said she was asleep in her room. However, when he checked, he found the room had been turned into a gym and there was no bed. Tara explained that Kaylee didn’t need the space.

The driver demanded to know where Kaylee was, and Tara said she was grounded for taking money from her purse. He went outside into the cold to find the camper, which was slightly tilted in the yard. He unlatched the door and found Kaylee bundled in coats and blankets, with a space heater plugged in but disconnected from the house. She appeared very thin.

When she recognized him, she mentioned that she had been living in the camper since Thanksgiving, lying during phone calls about how things were. She asked him not to cause trouble until after her birthday party, needing his trust. He took her back inside and laid her down in his bed. Tara watched from the kitchen, upset about how he was undermining her rules, claiming to be raising Kaylee properly.

Rick, from the recliner, added a comment about discipline.

How do you think the driver should handle the situation?
