Dr. Poppy Addison, a colorectal surgeon, explained that pregnancy and childbirth can place significant stress on the pelvic area, leading to issues like hemorrhoids and muscle injuries. Another colorectal surgeon, Dr. Carmen Fong, added that childbirth can sometimes result in skin tags from hemorrhoids, which may not fully go away but can change in appearance.

Dr. Amir Shay, an OB-GYN medical adviser, noted that these conditions could affect bowel control, potentially causing difficulties with gas or bowel movements. He estimated that a significant number of women might experience hemorrhoids during or after pregnancy, while more severe muscle injuries could occur in a smaller percentage of natural births. The specialists emphasized that many complications related to pregnancy and childbirth can be treated.

Experts said that women can manage their recovery by addressing constipation, which can worsen discomfort. Recommendations included drinking plenty of water, eating fiber-rich foods, and using stool softeners as necessary.

Dr. Addison stressed that women should not ignore persistent symptoms like pain or bleeding. She recommended consulting a specialist to discuss a personalized approach to recovery. Dr. Shay highlighted the need for more discussions about the various effects of childbirth, noting that multiple areas are impacted, not just the vagina.
