Walter “Walt” Zerod gained unexpected fame after a prankster harassed him during a late-night work shift. Strangers came together to support the father of four after the incident, which led to a significant GoFundMe campaign. One commenter noted that Walt seemed like a regular guy trying to protect his family.

The event that caught attention occurred in August at a grocery store in White Lake, Michigan, where Walt worked delivering Red Baron pizzas. He was already behind schedule while restocking frozen food aisles when a prankster from the Instagram account @thea.ctiveworld approached him, pretending to ask for the time.

As Walt checked his phone, the prankster played a recorded sound of an Apple Pay transaction, making it seem like he had taken $10 from Walt. Realizing he was being filmed, Walt attempted to leave, but the prankster followed him. Frustrated, he expressed his distress at the checkout, saying that he was struggling to manage his life and care for his children, who would be asleep by the time he got home. He shared that he had an early morning ahead, as he needed to service more grocery stores the next day.

Despite Walt’s visible discomfort, the pranksters posted the video online, which soon circulated widely. Many viewers became concerned that this could have negative repercussions for Walt’s job. A person named Luke Oakenshield decided to take action by starting a GoFundMe campaign called “Support a Harassed Red Baron Worker” to help Walt financially.

The campaign gained traction, quickly raising over $787,000 towards its goal of $900,000. GoFundMe assisted by verifying Walt’s identity and ensuring he received the donations. Luke connected with Walt and his partner through a video call to facilitate the process.

On November 5, Walt provided what he called his final update on the GoFundMe page. He expressed gratitude for the support his family received, stating how much it meant to them. He also mentioned wanting to prioritize his family’s privacy and declined further interviews, indicating he had been able to spend more time at home.

What do you think about the support he received from the community?
