Medical Professionals Advise Those With Groups of White Spots on Skin or Private Areas to Take Them Seriously

White spots on the skin may seem harmless, especially if they do not cause discomfort or have other noticeable symptoms. However, doctors advise that clusters of these spots, particularly in sensitive areas, should be examined more closely. Experts caution against using home remedies or trying to remove the bumps yourself. Celebrities like Katy Perry have brought attention to such skin issues during public appearances.

Doctors explain that clustered white spots could signal a common condition known as milia. The Cleveland Clinic reports that milia forms small, white cysts beneath the skin. This condition often appears in newborns, affecting about 40% to 50%, but adults can also develop these tiny bumps.

Dr. Marnie Nussbaum, a dermatology clinical instructor at Weill Cornell Medical College, noted that people frequently confuse milia with acne or whiteheads, which leads them to attempt squeezing or scrubbing the spots. However, she emphasizes that this approach rarely works because the bumps do not contain liquid sebum or bacteria. According to her, milia usually goes away on its own in a few weeks. For those wanting to prevent it, she suggests gentle cleansing to avoid the accumulation of flaky skin cells and regular exfoliation using products with alpha hydroxy acids, like glycolic or lactic acid. Retinol, which is derived from vitamin A, can also help by increasing skin cell turnover, although it should not be applied to sensitive areas to avoid irritation.

Rachel Varga, a double board-certified aesthetic nurse, shared insights on Instagram, referencing Katy Perry as someone who might have milia. In her post, she pointed out a scar on Perry’s face and observed fine lines around her lips, noting that many milia bumps are forming. Varga suggested that poor skincare and makeup routines could be factors, reinforcing Dr. Nussbaum’s advice about avoiding scrubbing and squeezing. She mentioned that one effective treatment for milia irregularities is a HydraFacial, which is a noninvasive skin treatment that cleanses, exfoliates, extracts impurities, and hydrates the skin in a single session. Varga described the HydraFacial as superior to older treatments like microdermabrasion.

Milia is not the only skin issue that can cause clusters of white spots. Fordyce spots are another condition that may appear in intimate areas. The Cleveland Clinic explains that Fordyce spots are small, visible bumps that can occur on mucosal surfaces, such as the lips, penis, and vagina. These spots are natural occurrences and do not indicate an infection or disease.
