Meghan Markle’s recent visit to a food bank has sparked a debate about the sincerity of her charitable actions. On October 15, she and Prince Harry went to a food bank in Nottingham, where they helped volunteers pack food. However, by October 20, a clip of Meghan asking a volunteer for instructions led some to doubt her motives. The volunteer responded that the task was “not very difficult,” and when Meghan inquired about moving to a different station, the volunteer shook her head and handed her a bag, suggesting she continue. This interaction was interpreted by some as a sign of annoyance with Meghan’s questions, with one critic commenting that it appeared to be staged for the cameras.
Even before this visit, Meghan was criticized for her choice of attire, specifically a $1,980 wool coat in relatively warm weather, according to The Telegraph. The couple visited Himmah Hub, an organization that assists those experiencing food poverty. While packing grocery bags, some observers felt Meghan’s actions seemed insincere, questioning her understanding of the food bank’s operation. However, supporters argued that their presence could help raise awareness for the charity they have backed for years.

Himmah Hub reported that it provided 11,961 food parcels to 1,188 families and 2,463 individuals in 2024-25. In 2021, Meghan donated about $13,000 from a community cookbook she worked on, with Harry contributing an additional $13,000. Meghan’s connection to this food bank dates back to the women she collaborated with on the cookbook.
Prior to her time at the food bank, Meghan spent part of her visit with women from the Hubb Community Kitchen, whom she had worked with since 2018. These women formed the kitchen to support their community after the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire. During her visit, Meghan was delighted to see them again, expressing her happiness about the reunion. Four contributors from the cookbook were present at Himmah, and they shared a group hug with Meghan, who indicated that it had been a long time since they last met. They assisted in preparing lunch for around 50 guests.
One cookbook contributor, Leila Hedjem, shared her joy at seeing Meghan again, stating they feel protective of her. Another contributor, Intlak Alsaiegh, mentioned that Meghan keeps in touch with them via WhatsApp. When asked about reuniting with the contributors, Meghan expressed that it was very meaningful to her. What do you think about the public’s response to Meghan’s charity work?
