Today, my heart is shattered. I had to say goodbye to my precious cat, Oreo. She was so much more than a pet; she was family. If only I could have gotten her help in time, she might still be with us. The truth is, all the vet clinics around me were closed when I needed them the most. It feels so unfair to lose her like this.
Oreo was an incredible cat. She had the softest fur, and her big, bright eyes always seemed to understand me, even on the toughest days. Every time I came home, she would rush to greet me, her little tail flicking back and forth with excitement. She brought joy and comfort into our lives, and nothing could replace her sweetness.

When I noticed Oreo was acting strangely, I panicked. My sister and I quickly decided to take her to the vet because she didn’t seem well. We rushed to the clinic that’s just a short drive away. My sister held Oreo tight, whispering calming words to her, while I drove as fast as I could. We were both so worried, hoping that the vet would take care of her and make her feel better.
But when we arrived, our hearts sank—this vet was closed. Feeling desperate, we called every other clinic in the area, but every single one was shut down too. It was a terrible feeling. The only other options were far away, and in that moment, driving hours felt like an eternity. Oreo was still breathing, but I could see that she was struggling. I just kept hoping that we’d find help in time.
The pain of watching her suffer was unbearable. If only there had been a 24-hour vet nearby, I truly believe she could have pulled through. It’s heartbreaking to think about the what-ifs. A little bit of help, just a little bit more time, could have made all the difference in the world.
As we searched for help, we realized the grim truth: there are not enough emergency veterinarians in our area. So many animals need care, and when it’s urgent, it’s simply not available. Oreo’s condition continued to worsen, and my heart was breaking into pieces. I felt completely helpless, like we couldn’t do anything to save her.
Unfortunately, the story took a tragic turn. Oreo had been attacked by some dogs and started to wheeze. I should have acted faster, but in that moment, I didn’t realize how serious it was. All we wanted was to help her, yet more time passed without care. As we finally called a vet that was too far away, she stopped breathing. It was devastating.
Oreo’s death left a massive void in our lives. She was more than a pet; she was a companion, a source of comfort, and a little bundle of joy that I will always cherish. The image of her soft face will forever be etched in my memory, and I wish I could have saved her.
As I come to terms with this loss, I can’t help but reflect on how vital it is to have more emergency vet services available. So many families love their pets like we did with Oreo, and it’s crushing to think that others might experience the same heartbreak due to a lack of resources.
In her memory, I want to spread awareness. Every pet deserves a chance to be saved, and every owner deserves the ability to seek help when they need it. I hope that by sharing our story, we can urge others to advocate for more 24-hour veterinary services. No one should have to feel the helplessness of losing a beloved fur baby just because help wasn’t there in time.
Now, as I sit here remembering Oreo, I ask you all: Have you experienced something similar with your pets? What would you wish for to ensure they get the help they need? Let’s start a conversation about how we can support each other and our furry friends!
