Patrick Stewart found success in Hollywood, but he reflected that his greatest regret was unrelated to his acting career. The 86-year-old actor passed away following a brief battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia, as mentioned in a statement on his Instagram account. Before his death, Stewart shared his sorrow about his strained relationship with his children, Daniel Stewart and Sophie Alexandra Stewart.
Stewart built a remarkable legacy over many years in the entertainment industry. However, he acknowledged that his commitment to acting impacted his family relationships. He has a son, Daniel, and a daughter, Sophie, from his first marriage to Sheila Falconer, which lasted from 1966 until their divorce in 1990. Daniel was born in 1967 and Sophie in 1972.

In a 2023 interview with the Irish Independent, Stewart expressed that his relationship with his children was “practically non-existent,” which caused him much grief. He mentioned that he often felt pain when thinking about his children and felt responsible for their lives and choices. Stewart admitted that he prioritized his acting career over his family.
During the interview, he was asked if his portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation reflected the kind of father he wished he had. Stewart explained that it was more about the kind of father he wished he could be. He noted that now, being separated from his children, their lack of relationship weighed heavily on him. He acknowledged that both of his children are now adults in their 50s, and he found it difficult to come to terms with their distance.
Sophie has mostly stayed out of the public eye, while Daniel pursued acting, appearing in various American and British productions such as Detonator and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. When Daniel expressed his interest in acting, Stewart felt troubled due to his own regrets about parenting. He recognized that he could have been a better parent when his children were younger, admitting he was too focused on his career.
In a 2009 interview with the Independent, he stated he was trying to improve his relationships with his grandchildren and felt that his children had come to terms with the past. Daniel has acted alongside his father in three productions, including a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, the film Death Train, and the sitcom Blunt Talk. Stewart later reflected positively on Daniel choosing a similar career path.
