A 32-year-old woman, Mahrah Al Nahyan, who is linked by marriage to the royal family of Abu Dhabi, was discovered unconscious on a street in West London. Nearby, a three-year-old child was playing barefoot. Reports indicated that Al Nahyan had been using substances in the days leading up to the incident, prompting bystanders to intervene for the child’s safety. Online reactions were strong, with one person suggesting that the child should be sent to family and that Al Nahyan should receive rehabilitation help.
The event took place on June 13, when passersby saw Al Nahyan slumped against railings next to an unconscious man. The young child was playing with a scooter and was close to a busy street. Prosecutor Rio Pahlavanpour informed Southwark Crown Court that observers became concerned as the child was unattended and near traffic. They stepped in to ensure the toddler’s safety and called the police, who arrived around 1:50 p.m. The court heard that Al Nahyan remained unresponsive for approximately 30 minutes.

Footage from a witness reportedly showed Al Nahyan leaning against the railings with her head down and arms crossed. Nearby, a toy plane and other items were scattered, and the man lay unconscious in a doorway. When Al Nahyan finally regained consciousness, she allegedly behaved erratically and questioned why those around her were concerned.
Authorities searched her belongings and found items related to substance use, but no illegal drugs were discovered, according to the court. During the hearing, it was mentioned that the toddler chased a piece of paper and ran toward the road, but a bystander intervened before any harm could occur. Judge Mr. Justice Johnson KC criticized Al Nahyan’s actions, stating that her recklessness in leaving the child unattended while under the influence posed a serious risk to the child’s safety.
The judge emphasized that without the actions of strangers, the child could have faced significant danger, including the risk of wandering off or being harmed. It was noted that seeing Al Nahyan and the man unconscious might have caused distress for the child. Al Nahyan pleaded guilty to one count of child neglect. She received a two-year community order requiring rehabilitation, a £5,000 fine, and a £1,000 order for prosecution costs. The court disclosed that she has a monthly allowance of £8,000 and has been receiving treatment for substance use.
Her defense attorney, Stephen Vullo KC, stated that Al Nahyan had been in treatment at the Priory center in Woking, Surrey, since July. He noted that she had not used drugs on the day of the incident but was exhausted from previous substance use. The defense claimed she had ceased using drugs since starting treatment and showed remorse and determination to overcome her addiction. Vullo indicated that Al Nahyan plans to complete a three-month program, which will finish at the end of the month. Afterward, she intends to rent a place in the Guildford area, continue day treatment, and attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings. What are your thoughts on this situation?
