A high school girl stopped attending classes, prompting her teacher to investigate her absence. Jonathan Shaw, a teacher in Maryland, realized something was wrong when the girl missed many days of school and tennis practice. He decided to check on her, leading to an unexpected and impactful moment for both.
During an interview with the YouTube podcast Soft White Underbelly, Shaw shared how this situation affected him. He mentioned that he had never experienced anything like it in nearly ten years of teaching. The girl had been part of his tennis class for several years before she suddenly stopped showing up.

After noticing her absence, Shaw went to the front office to see if she was in class. When he found out she was, he asked her to step outside. Her reaction surprised him; she began to cry. Shaw noted that she was dealing with serious issues at home, which affected her mental health and made it hard for her to attend classes or prioritize tennis.
Over lunch, the girl opened up about her struggles, and Shaw learned more about her difficult home life. They talked every day for the following week, and soon she returned to tennis and improved her grades. After she graduated, the girl sent Shaw an email expressing her gratitude for reaching out to her. She felt like he had answered her prayers by showing concern.
Shaw keeps this email taped in his classroom as a reminder of their connection. He reflected on how such experiences can be life-changing for both teachers and students. He mentioned that her email came at a time when he, too, was facing personal challenges. Shaw stated he values the bond they formed and would not trade it for anything, noting that the girl is now doing well in college.
How do you think teachers can positively impact their students’ lives?
