Arachnophobia is the fear of spiders, a very common fear worldwide. It’s not only about dangerous tarantulas but also all spiders that can unexpectedly appear. Some people view this fear as irrational, while others find it understandable since spiders can be quite unsettling and can appear anywhere. Although this fear might seem irrational, many people on r/AskReddit have shared similar fears that became reality when they least expected it. Here are some of their stories.

One person shared their struggle with a fear of driving on highways. They usually avoided it but got better over time. They decided to visit friends about four hours away and felt relaxed while driving on the highway. However, 20 minutes before reaching their destination, another driver attempted to merge into their lane, causing an accident. Their car lost control and crossed into oncoming traffic, resulting in a collision with an 18-wheeler. After this experience, their fear of driving returned strongly.

Another individual mentioned a long-standing fear of boats, despite loving the water. When they were 13, they were on a boat in a bay when dark clouds appeared. They tried to return to the marina but ran out of fuel halfway. No one could assist them due to an approaching storm. They dropped anchor as a severe storm hit, bringing heavy rain and high waves. Once the storm passed, they were very close to a rocky dockyard, but the coast guard eventually towed them to safety. Since then, they ensure they have enough fuel before going out on a boat.

One more person talked about their fear of being watched through their windows at night, which caused panic for years. A month ago, while at their computer, they noticed movement outside their window. They waited to see what would happen and saw a stranger outside, who quickly fled when they made eye contact.

Some fears are specific, like a fear of moths or cheese graters. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), about 12.5% of adults in the United States face specific phobias at some point in their lives. Specific phobias are some of the most common anxiety disorders globally and can involve fears of certain animals or situations, like driving.

One person recounted their dislike of moths, describing them as unsettling. While camping in a state park, they turned on an electric lantern, which attracted a swarm of moths. They felt overwhelmed by the sudden presence of so many moths.

Another person mentioned the fear of choking while eating alone, recalling a time when they were at home with no one around while eating peanut butter.

Fear can take many forms, and these stories illustrate how they can sometimes turn into real-life experiences. What are your thoughts on these fears?
