Stained glass has the power to change ordinary light into something beautiful. Behind its bright colors and detailed designs is a lot of skill, patience, and hard work. Luis Porras is a stained-glass expert who understands this well. He has spent many years learning how to create, restore, and take care of these special pieces of art. Luis began his career when he was just 16, joining Judson Studios in Los Angeles. After working there for 25 years, he took on the important job of looking after over 500 stained-glass windows and panels at Forest Lawn’s six memorial parks in Southern California. Some of these pieces are hundreds of years old, making his efforts vital for keeping their beauty for future generations.
Luis shared his story with Bored Panda through representatives from Forest Lawn. He talked about his interesting career, the challenges he faces when restoring old stained glass, and what makes these artworks unique.

Luis’s love for stained glass started when he first entered Judson Studios as a teenager. He felt the history of the place as soon as he walked in. He remembered seeing craftsmen working and being shown around when he was young. He was filled with curiosity and excitement about what he was entering. He initially worked with Douglas Judson on faceted glass and waterproofing windows. His past experiences with music and arts helped him appreciate the creativity behind stained glass.
After his long time at Judson Studios, Luis took on a significant role at Forest Lawn. He examines and restores various stained-glass windows, and he continues to discover new aspects of the craft even after many years. He noted that while the techniques and materials have remained largely the same over time, the styles and artists have changed. He often finds himself surprised by different designs and techniques, such as when he first worked on a Tiffany window. He is also curious about the choices artists made when designing these windows.
