A 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier named Luna was found and reunited with her family after being missing for over a month in Yellowstone National Park. She went missing on September 10 when her owners, visiting from California, left her in a cabin marked with a “Do not disturb” sign. They think Luna escaped after housekeeping opened the door. Though staff spent hours trying to catch her, Luna had already disappeared into the wilderness, according to the New York Times.
During the month she was lost, Luna was seen crossing roads, wandering around employee housing, and entering lodges through automatic doors, all while surrounded by wildlife like grizzly bears, coyotes, and wolves. The National Park Service noted that Yellowstone’s temperatures can range from 31°F at night to 52°F during the day. Luna’s journey ended well, as she managed to survive through her strong will. Having previously spent her first year on the streets before being adopted, Luna appeared to be retracing her owners’ steps based on the locations where she was spotted.

Luna’s owners were actively searching for her, initially fearing she could be dead or permanently lost in the park, which spans 3,500 square miles. However, following multiple sightings of a dog resembling Luna, the search was reignited. The turning point came when Katie Boucher, a volunteer from Norris Ark Training and Recovery Center, along with one of the owners, located Luna in a live trap that was baited with scraps. After a veterinarian checked her, it was confirmed that Luna had lost about 10 pounds but was otherwise in good condition and ready to return home. Boucher informed the Associated Press that Luna was alert and in good spirits.
