However, many people, including some Americans, are now questioning how things went wrong. Many citizens feel overwhelmed by American culture, politics, or societal expectations. There is even an online community where Americans express their frustrations.

For instance, one post highlights that the real reason for financial struggles is not the working-class poor but those in power. Another post points out the troubling use of racial terms that oversimplify complex social issues.

The idea of the American Dream suggests that anyone can succeed with hard work, but the posts reveal that many Americans feel this dream is far from reality. A survey by the Pew Research Center indicates that only about 53% of Americans believe the American Dream is still attainable.

The survey also shows that about 41% of respondents think the dream was once possible but is no longer so, while 6% believe it was never possible. In total, 8,709 adults in the U.S. participated in the survey. It was noted that older Americans, particularly those aged 65 and above, are more likely to feel the dream is still achievable, with about two-thirds agreeing. Additionally, higher-income individuals tend to be more optimistic about the potential for achieving the American Dream.

Moreover, achieving this dream is said to require significant financial resources. According to Investopedia, the total cost of the American Dream can amount to around $5.3 million over a family’s lifetime, which includes expenses like weddings, home purchases, raising children, and retirement. It was mentioned that dual-income households are generally better positioned to meet these financial demands, whereas families with only one income may struggle significantly.

Investopedia also highlighted that buying a home represents one of the biggest financial challenges on the path to achieving the American Dream. They reported that financing a median-priced home could cost about $1.3 million, which constitutes a large portion of lifetime earnings for families.

What do you think about these perceptions of the American Dream?
