A group of small, wide-eyed puppies often reminds people that some of them may have faced tough beginnings. All Sato Rescue, located in Puerto Rico, aims to help dogs in these situations as part of their larger mission. This nonprofit is dedicated to improving the lives of abandoned dogs on the island and lowering their population. They rescue and find homes for “Satos,” a term used in Puerto Rico for mixed-breed dogs. However, their efforts extend beyond individual rescues. All Sato Rescue also works to tackle the root causes of dog overpopulation, abuse, and neglect through public education, affordable spay and neuter services, and advocacy for humane solutions.

Over the years, the organization has seen many successful outcomes. They have shared stories about dogs transitioning from living on the streets or being abandoned to finding homes where their main concerns are playtime, walks, cozy napping spots, and getting love from their new families. While the puppies featured here are certainly cute, they also represent the positive changes that rescue efforts can bring.

These puppies are just six weeks old and have some skin issues, but they are making progress and are soon headed to a shelter partner on the mainland. Another puppy, named Varo, was found in Aguadilla. He is around five weeks old, weighs only 3-4 pounds, and is recovering from lice. He is now safe in a foster home near San Juan.

In Vega Baja, four puppies were rescued from an abandoned house by the beach. They are now safe and lucky to have been found in time. Oaklee, one of seven puppies born after their mother was left at a shelter, is doing well and will go to a partner shelter soon.

Champ was discovered with his four siblings in a cardboard box in the Adjuntas protected forest in Puerto Rico. They were abandoned, but the rescuers are glad to help them. Bandit, part of a litter that includes Smokey and Outlaw, took over a week to rescue in Caguas. They were eventually handed over to the Doglando Foundation.

In their first rescue of 2024, a tiny one-month-old puppy was found in Guayama and is now in a foster home, receiving care thanks to the support of the organization’s donors.
