Bored Panda spoke with Karen Weiler, a professional pet photographer and founder of Posh Pets Photography, about cat behavior and the internet’s fascination with cats. Karen explained that a cat’s tail can reveal a lot about how they feel. For example, if a cat gently swishes its tail from side to side, it usually means they are happy. A cat walking with its tail held high shows confidence and joy, while a fast-twitching tail combined with hissing suggests fear or unhappiness.
Karen also discussed the difficulties of photographing cats. She believes it’s crucial to create a comfortable and safe environment for the pets. Many cats prefer to stay in familiar surroundings, but they might not welcome strangers or bright flashes. She emphasized the importance of a consultation with the cat owner before a photo session, which helps her understand the cat’s preferences.
On the day of the shoot, Karen takes her time to help the cat adjust to her presence and the equipment. She often sits on the floor to let the cat come to her at their own pace. Karen noted that patience is essential for building trust with the cat. Capturing the right moment can be challenging, but she finds that photographing the cat just before they move or while they are in motion highlights their personality. Providing engaging items for the cat to look at can also help keep them interested.
Bored Panda wanted to know why cats are so popular online. Karen suggested that those who live with cats understand they each have unique personalities and behaviors that captivate people. Why do you think cats have such a strong presence on the internet?
