Many people find stained glass to be beautiful. However, you may only see it when visiting impressive cathedrals while traveling. If you appreciate this art form, you’re in for a surprise. A visit to the Stained Glass subreddit revealed a collection of creative and inspiring work. The images shared demonstrate that talented artists can create a wide variety of pieces using stained glass.
Stained glass is admired by many, but it is not often seen. If you’re curious about its history, The Stained Glass Association of America explains that it has existed for over a thousand years. An early example of multicolored glass in windows was found at St. Paul’s Monastery in Jarrow, England, which dates back to 686 AD. Additionally, experts suggest that stained glass windows appeared in Arabia during the second half of the 13th century.
This art form is not only Christian; it appears in many churches and cathedrals. Over time, stained glass styles have evolved. During the Romanesque period, red and blue were the main colors used, often depicting saints or biblical stories. The Gothic era saw stained glass featuring symbolism from bestiaries and other themes. Depending on the church’s location, colors varied, including reds, blues, whites, yellows, and greens.
With the arrival of the Renaissance, stained glass began to change significantly. It started to show up in secular buildings and featured subjects in period clothing. Artists began to represent historical events, allegorical themes, and abstract ideas. The ability to ship artwork over long distances allowed stained glass to be seen in more places across Europe.
Today, stained glass is not limited to church windows. The collection showcases many innovative artists who are expanding what can be created with this medium.
