Hollywood Actress Sparks Anger After Unexpected Call for Safer Intimate Scenes Reemerges

Maggie Gyllenhaal, an actress, once doubted the need for an intimacy coordinator while filming. However, her perspective changed after her own experiences on set. Recently, her thoughts on the need for protection for actors during intimate scenes have gained attention online, leading to a discussion about whether these coordinators are necessary in Hollywood. Some people question the need for special precautions in such scenes, while others believe that performers should have the freedom to change their minds without pressure from production.

Gyllenhaal had initially felt confident about handling intimate scenes, as she had been acting in them for nearly 20 years. During an appearance on SiriusXM’s Tell Me Everything with John Fugelsang in September 2019, she discussed her work on HBO’s The Deuce, a show about the adult entertainment industry in New York during the 1970s and 1980s. This series was one of the first major productions to include an intimacy coordinator on set.

She shared that in her earlier experiences, she managed by figuring out what worked best for her and relied on the support of others around her. However, she began to question this approach after hearing from other actresses about the presence of specialists for dangerous stunts while intimate scenes lacked similar support. This led her to wonder why there was always a coordinator for fight scenes but not for intimate moments.

Although she initially brought in coordinator Alicia Rodis to assist younger actresses, Gyllenhaal found that having the professional on set was beneficial for her as well. She explained how Rodis made her feel more at ease during these scenes. Gyllenhaal mentioned that while she wasn’t worried about nudity, she was concerned about physical contact, especially with unfamiliar partners.

In the first season of The Deuce, Gyllenhaal’s character had many scenes with different men, which prompted her to ask for a physical barrier. The crew created a barrier using a cut-up yoga mat placed inside a pillowcase. With Rodis present, Gyllenhaal felt supported in discussing her concerns and exploring various options. She noted that this support allowed her and her co-star Emily Meade to communicate openly about their experiences.

Should all actors have the right to feel comfortable during intimate scenes?
