In today’s world, writing a handwritten note seems rare. Most people communicate through direct messages, texts, and social media updates. In the past, however, sending a letter or a note was often the only way to connect if face-to-face communication wasn’t possible. One way to find lost notes was through messages in bottles.

Discovered Notes

The first documented message in a bottle was sent by the philosopher Theophrastus around 310 B.C., according to New York Magazine. This note was sent by a student of Aristotle to test whether the Atlantic Ocean flows into the Mediterranean Sea. These messages found on beaches have sometimes caused disputes. In the 1500s, Queen Elizabeth designated a royal “Uncorker of Ocean Bottles” and made it illegal to open ocean bottles without permission.

By 1846, the United States Coast & Geodetic Survey started releasing many messages in bottles to study ocean currents. A notable message was discovered in 1913, with a note stating, “From Titanic. Goodbye all. Burke of Glanmire, Cork.” This note washed ashore in Dunkettle, Ireland, a year after the ship sank.

People continue to be intrigued by the strange letters and notes they find. In 2024, Central Pennsylvania gained attention when mysterious notes began appearing in the area. These messages were found in sealed food items and other products, discussing current events, controversial topics, and conspiracy theories.

A psychiatrist, Dr. Matthew Berger, noted that the mysterious notes resembled what experts term as schizophrenic writing. He explained that the writing seems to have a loose association, where it makes sense in the writer’s mind but appears as random words and phrases to others. The disorganized structure of the writing suggests a lack of coherence in grammar and syntax.
