A neighbor first heard some meows, and then the writer noticed the sounds too. The writer found a small kitten among the tall weeds and picked her up. This kitten, named Nugget, is about five weeks old. At first, she was scared but quickly warmed up, purring loudly and staying close to her new owner. However, she also seeks food from others. Nugget tries to play with the older cats, but they are not friendly, so the writer ends up playing and cuddling her. Nugget seemed to know how to use the litter box right away, which was surprising since no one claimed her, and her siblings were not found.

The writer set out food and live traps. They caught a feral adult cat that did not want to be inside and reacted by biting the writer. After that, the writer got some antibiotics, and the neighbor took in the feral cat as a barn cat, confirming it did not have rabies. The writer then changed their method by putting out food and a blink but did not see any other kittens after six days.
