A man named Casey found himself in an unexpected situation when he noticed smoke from a house fire in the distance. His GPS had mistakenly directed him off the correct path while he was traveling on state Highway 114, south of Lyerly in Georgia’s Chattooga County. This wrong turn made him the first person to respond to the fire at the home of James and Larita Burke, who are well-known foster parents. At the time, there were 11 children and a grandchild living there, some of whom were fostered and others adopted.
James Burke shared with Local 3 News that he had fallen asleep in his recliner on Saturday night and woke up to a surprising situation. He recalled someone warning him about the fire, saying that Casey had never been on that road before but felt compelled to help when he saw the flames from a distance. Alongside his son, Casey assisted in waking up all the children and getting them to safety as the fire destroyed their home and two cars, leaving only ashes and burnt beams.

While many of the children have since been relocated to different foster homes, Mrs. Burke noted that the community’s support has been quickly and generously offered, even after losing everything. The Burkes have fostered around 500 children over the years, and their home was filled with the sounds of laughter and joy from those they cared for.
The Burkes informed Local News 3 that they are searching for a rental home big enough for their family of 14 while they work on rebuilding their house, which luckily had some brick walls that survived the fire. This incident serves as a reminder that sometimes, unexpected events can lead to positive outcomes. What do you think about this story?
